Five Causes of Disease

All sicknesses and diseases, excluding accidents, can be traced to five root causes:

1. What we think

The mind has a powerful influence on our health. This is affirmed by the fact that patients can be given a pill with no medication (a placebo) and up to 40% of those who receive it get better, because they think the pill will help them. In recent studies, this result has been increased to 70% by telling the patient this pill is very expensive. Scripture states, "as a man thinketh in his heart, so is he" (Proverbs 23:7).

2. What we say

"Death and life are in the power of the tongue . . ." (Proverbs 18:21). Words have powerful effects upon our emotions which in turn influence our health. For example, "the words of a talebearer are as wounds, and they go down into the innermost parts of the belly" (Proverbs 18:8). On the other hand, ". . . a good report maketh the bones [healthy]" (Proverbs 15:30). Verbal blessings are a powerful means of increasing health, as well as the power of crying out to God for the healing of an incurable disease. (See Psalm 50:14.)

3. What we do

The laws that govern our health are similar to the laws of nature. Thus, we reap what we sow, we reap more than we sow, and we reap in a different season than we sow. God warns, "For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting"
(Galatians 6:8).

4. What we eat

Good nutrition is important; however the three factors above have more to do with our health than what we eat. We can buy the best organic food available, but if we have anger, guilt, bitterness, lust, greed, fear, or envy, our food will become toxic to our system. Thus Solomon advises: "Better is a dinner of herbs where love is, than a stalled ox and hatred therewith" (Proverbs 15:17). Good nutrition includes what we eat, what we drink, what air we breath, and what exercise we get.

5. What we inherit

Some of our diseases and physical weaknesses have been passed on to us by our parents. Actually, all sickness and death originated with Adam's transgression and has affected every person in the world. If there is a family history of a particular disease, special disciplines must be put in place in order to offset them.
